Customization

I made a word cloud from text. Can I add or remove some words?

Yes! Go to the "Words" section in the editor to add, remove, or reorder words as needed.

I made a word cloud, but I want a different layout.

Click the "Redraw" button in the top toolbar. This will rearrange words without changing colors, shapes, or fonts.

Can I customize the shape, color palette, or fonts of my word cloud?

Absolutely! Visit the How-To guides for the specific steps.

Can I use multiple colors in a single word cloud?

Yes! Open the Palette section in the editor.

  • Choose 1 to 5 colors for words.
  • Set a background color.
  • If using a shape, adjust the shape background and border (or outline) color.

Can I use gradient colors in a word cloud?

Yes! Gradients can be applied to any color in the palette: words, the background, shape fill, and border (or outline).

Can I use transparent colors?

Yes! This can be very useful. A fully transparent background makes a PNG image easy to overlay on another image. It’s also convenient for printing.

You can also set a semi-transparent color for a smooth blend.

Are background images supported?

Yes, you can. Please check out the "Background image" option in the Colors section in the editor.

Can I upload my own background image?

Sure. Please check out the "Background image" option in the Colors section in the editor.

Can I make a background image semi-transparent?

Yes! The background image will blend with the background color. This can be helpful if your background is too busy—making it less prominent so the words stand out better.

Yes! WordCloud.app has hundreds of built-in shapes, all tested to work well for word clouds. These include simple symbols like hearts and stars, as well as holiday-themed shapes.

Can I use multiple fonts in a single word cloud?

Yes, you can select one font or a combination of fonts. WordCloud.app currently supports over 90 beautiful fonts.

What file formats can I download my word cloud in?

You can download a PNG image or, for animated word clouds, a MP4 file.

I want a word to stay in place. What are pinned words, and how do I use them?

If you want a specific word to stay in a specific place and not move when your word cloud is redrawn, add a pinned word.

For example, if you are making a greeting card, pin the recipient's name in the middle.

A pinned word will not be repeated throughout the word cloud, but will stay in place. Other words will flow around it.

How do I make words repeat (or not repeat)?

  • To avoid repetition, select "No Shape" – it's the first option in the list).
  • If using a shape, toggle "Repeat words to fill shape" in the settings:
    • Checked: Words repeat until the shape is full.
    • Unchecked: Each word appears once. If there are few words, the shape may look empty.

You can select the "No Shape" shape – it's the very first in the list.

When you select a particular shape, there is a "Repeat words to fill shape" checkbox available below. If checked, WordCloud.app tries to fill in your selected shape with repeated words until they don't fit anymore.

If not checked, WordCloud.app will simply place each word once inside the shape. If there are few words in the word cloud, the image may appear half-empty.

I added a word, but I don’t see it in my word cloud.

This can happen if your word is too long or the font size is too large — so it simply doesn't fit.

Try one of the following:

  • Making the word or phrase shorter.
  • Reducing the minimum font size.
  • Increasing the overall image size.

Can I adjust the size of my word cloud?

Yes, you can resize your word cloud by adjusting the dimensions in the editor - just scroll down to the Image Size option.

Can I share my word cloud with others?

Yes! Click "Share" in the editor to publish and share your word cloud.

Others can view and "like" your word cloud.

Note: want them to edit it, too? Try the Collaborative Word Cloud Editor.
