Halloween Bat

We associate bats with Halloween! We decorate the walls with little bat silhouettes, send bat stickers and bat images to our friends.

But what do bats have to do with Halloween?

There are several explanations, and possibly all of them could be true (or part true).

In the autumn, in the Northeast in the United States, bats swarm in large quantities. Perhaps, this led people to think they are excited for Halloween, just like us.

Dracula, the 1897 novel by Bram Stoker, hints that vampires can turn into bats. Of course, vampire bats existed for approximately 26 million years before the book was written, but Count Dracula made them very popular indeed.

Some people consider bats scary or weird, and therefore associate them with Halloween. Since they are nocturnal animals, they are associated with darkness and evil deeds. If a bat flies past a pumpkin lantern in the dead of the night, isn't it spooky??

We consider bats cute! They are very interesting animals, the only mammals to be able to fly — isn't it wonderful? They pollinate so many plants, such as bananas, mangoes, or guavas; AND they feed on mosquitos! Bats simply deserve to be celebrated! 🦇
